Students at Indiana University are fortunate to have so many resources available to them that concern their well being. CAPS (counseling and psychological services) is a service provided to students with their main concern being the students mental health. This service allows students to engage in one on one counseling, group counseling, and other workshops. The CAPS staff includes professional social workers, counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists who all have specialized training to deal with issues that students most commonly face. The athletic department here at Indiana University have also employed sports psychologists who work directly with teams and individual athletes. This is just another perk that is available to athletes participating in sport at Indiana University.

My Experience:
During my time in the athletic training program, I had the opportunity to work with an athlete that lost multiple family members in an automobile accident. This traumatic even caused her to suffer from anxiety and depression. Due to this, the athletic training staff had to continuously be away of her mental status and demeanor. An important aspect of our duty was to keep the positive talk up and make sure that she stays away from getting down on herself. One important factor when dealing with an athlete in these circumstances is to never judge them, talk down to them, or act like you know what they are going through unless you actually have been through the same experience.
