During the very first day of spring fitness testing in 2015, we had an athlete go down with a torn meniscus. Originally the news was devastating to her and she was having a tough time dealing with the news. We had a new coach and this athlete was going into her junior year and was going to have an increased leadership role on the team. Initially the surgery was going to be to repair the damaged structure which was going to take her out of spring competition completely. During the time leading up to the surgery we had to implement ample amounts of positive talk to keep her in a good mindset about the entire situation. After surgery the repair was not possible and the structure was removed leading to a much shorter recovery time. This was good news to her and provided much more motivation for her now that she had the legitimate possibility to play during the spring season. Throughout her rehab it was important for us to keep her motivation high. We did this by implementing goals that were met along with various exercises so that she would not become bored and complacent. These exercises were also designed to allow her to physically see the strength and proprioceptive improvements she was making.
