Diagnostic Tests
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Looking for an elevated number of white blood cells (lymphocytes).
Monospot Blood Test
Tests for the presence of antibodies to the EBV. This is a very reliable test however results may be negative early on during the infection.
Treatment
Mononucleosis is a self limiting disease so treatment goals are to relieve symptoms. These treatments include rest and hydration along with acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve pain and fever.
Returning To Play
Symptoms last on average from 2 weeks to 2 months. Acute phase and fever usually lasts for about 10-14 days. Lymph nodes and spleen return to normal size within 4 weeks. Return to sport is commonly allows after fever and acute symptoms have subsided but protective considerations need to be considered for an enlarged spleen, especially in contact sports.
